Emotion and Wisdom through Family Storytelling

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.” A quote from Anthony J. D’Angelo that’s always helpful to me whenever I look towards the future. Reading through quotes of inspiration everyday can, without a doubt, make a positive impact. These people who provide such quotes have a story that’s awaiting to be told and the abundance of recollections available only make you, the listener, want to hear more. Our grandparents, who provide many stories for us, have a sense of what they want to see out of their grandchildren. Some of the knowledge we have comes from our elders and preserving the memories we have with them are an important thing to do. Our elders have added wisdom through storytelling and that wisdom has continued to help us as we hope to have success.

The recollections and stories that shape us as people are what we need every day. When grandparents tell us a story, they tell it from the heart. Emotion flows through the story and we are able to take that and keep it as a memory for us as listeners to live positive. Our elders are putting out emotion that we as grandchildren hope to have. That hope comes from wisdom and with the addition of emotion, our purpose starts to become clear. Our purpose to do something positive has a lot to do with what our elders are teaching. They want us to represent and promote something important and from their stories, we are able to learn and prosper. My grandmother has shared countless stories that each included emotion. When telling a story, speaking with emotion always helps. Emotion lets me as a listener understand what’s spoken and how I can add that to my story.

Preserving special memories are a must and making sure that we never forget them are even more important. The stories that our elders tell us create happiness and the vivid memories of our moments with them are unique. These moments that we have with grandparents are precious and it’s essential for the future of our family to experience. Here at Tealgo, we’re happy to help you record these experiences and hope you keep these memories for the future.

An emotional recollection about his glorious life!

Isn’t it fascinating to listen to your grandpa reminiscing about the old days as you marvel at his twinkling eyes while he proudly shares the integral pieces of his life with you? There is a certain inherited pride and emotional value that all of us associate with our grandpa’s stories.  It is almost as if we are the custodians of all these stories and all things cool that he accomplished in his youth. In a hearty conversation with Tealgo, Mr. Garg laid open a storehouse of many such fond memories and made us realize why these stories need to be preserved at all cost.

“They were different days,” he said, beginning his recollections with his college days. He shared that while he learnt important lessons in discipline and punctuality at the Roorkee University, it was during his days at BHU that he developed an intense love for Shakespeare and a deep regard for Bhagavad Gita.
Mr. Garg then went back to his time as a star employee at the Western railways and how he averted two huge accidents through quick instinct and dedication.
During the conversation, he also shared the memories of building his Gurugram house, and also helped us with some important life lessons including the “principle of diminishing returns” in regards to money and the human tendency to hoard it.
“What I know today, I wish I had known it at 18. So many disasters could have been avoided,” he said is a voice laced with nostalgia as he came back from the reverie.

A bitter-sweet recollection of the time we moved to India

Aren’t we all fragments of stories from our families’ past, holding on to them like our life depends on it? With Tealgo’s uniquely crafted process, we provide you a platform to preserve these valuable memories in their true essence.
“They found there were bombs in the basement. We had to leave that house and we had nowhere to go,” says Mrs. Singh with a serene smile as if all of that happened in an old old dream. However, it in fact is a living breathing truth that she continues to foster in her heart.
As she recollects her journey from Sialkot to India, Mrs. Singh sits in her warmly lit living room with a light heart, engaging in occasional banter with her  Air-force officer husband. All of it is past and yet somehow merges with the present.
She begins, “It all started when one of us father’s students showed up at our home on a fateful day and said, ‘You have a grown up daughter, you must vacate immediately.’”
Soon enough her family found themselves on their way to India where a compensation home had already been arranged for the family. However, the news about the bombs came out soon and the family was rendered homeless, which was just the beginning of a series of ordeals.
When they first moved to India, all of the flour mills were owned by Muslims which basically translates to “no aata for the Hindu families.” “But we were wheat eaters and so we all learned to grind. It was good fun. At least for us, it seemed great fun. Parents had to worry but we were just kids, we didn’t know what to worry about,” she says.
She laughs as she adds, “My brothers can’t even look at aloo till date because back then we couldn’t afford anything but aloo as it was the cheapest vegetable.”
As children, Mrs. Singh and her siblings made the best of their displaced days in India and nothing else mattered. “Money was not so great but we all had great fun,” she says as her eyes get reflective after conjuring a bitter-sweet memory from Partition.

Family Stories – A Perfect Gift for Your Children

Children, God’s greatest gift, love to listen to stories, share family history and enjoy time with their parents/grandparents. It not only gives them an insight into the family heritage but helps them tremendously in increasing their overall development.

Family stories are tales about people, places, and events related to our ancestors or immediate family members. As per research, children who are well aware of their family stories have a stronger sense of identity and greater resilience compared to those children who do not have such awareness. Family stories serve as a perfect source to promote belongingness, which in turn is not only for a person’s family but to the whole community at large.

A range of family stories over a time span, in the end, creates “the family story.” A story depicts everything varying from day to day life to exciting adventures, all deepening listeners enjoyment and a better understanding of their past. Personal anecdotes of distinguished accomplishments as well as failures are empowering, especially the latter, which encourages us that life moves on despite momentary troubles.

Children become primary beneficiaries of these stories; in fact, all generations enjoy the sense of connection conveyed by the family stories well told.

In reality, we often neglect these pearls of wisdom and other related instances which can contribute to a great storytelling part.

You can record your activities like wedding stories, holiday memories, graduation stories, and funny short anecdotes in the form of digital memories that can be accessed by your children and the coming generations. These digital memories can serve as a perfect gift for your children that can be cherished always even when you are long gone forever.
